Got a new computer and want to keep the Windows licence you already paid for? Whether you can depends on one thing: the licence type. Here is how to check, how to move it properly, and what to do when Windows says no.

First: can your licence move at all?

Only retail licences transfer between computers. OEM licences — the kind pre-installed on a branded PC — are permanently tied to the first machine they activate on and cannot be moved, even if that machine is switched off forever.

Check which one you have. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

slmgr /dli

A small window appears. Look at the description line:

  • It contains RETAIL channel — you can transfer it.
  • It contains OEM_DM channel — you cannot. The licence stays with that computer.
  • It contains VOLUME_MAK or VOLUME_KMSCLIENT — this is an organisational licence; transfer is governed by that organisation’s agreement.

If the window will not open, run slmgr /dlv instead for the detailed version.

Step 1: find your product key

If you bought the key from a retailer you should already have it in your email — that is the reliable copy, keep it. To read the key currently installed on the machine, run this in Command Prompt as administrator:

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

That returns the key embedded in the firmware, which is the OEM key on a branded PC. For a retail key you installed yourself, PowerShell is more reliable:

(Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey

If neither returns anything, your key is not stored in firmware — go back to your purchase email.

Step 2: remove the licence from the old PC

This is the step people skip, and it is the reason transfers fail. Deactivate on the old machine before activating on the new one. In Command Prompt as administrator:

slmgr /upk

That uninstalls the product key. Then clear it from the registry so it cannot be picked up again:

slmgr /cpky

Windows on the old machine will now report as not activated. That is expected and correct — you are moving the licence, not copying it.

Step 3: activate on the new PC

On the new computer, open Settings → System → Activation, choose Change product key, and enter your key. Or from Command Prompt as administrator:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

The first command installs the key, the second activates it against Microsoft’s servers. Give it a few seconds.

If online activation fails

A retail key that has been used before will sometimes refuse online activation because Microsoft’s servers still associate it with the old hardware. This is normal and there is a built-in route around it: activate by phone.

slui 4

That opens the phone activation wizard. Choose your country, and you get an automated service that reads back a confirmation ID. When it asks how many computers the licence is installed on, the honest answer is one — because you removed it from the old machine in step 2. The system is designed for exactly this case.

Common error codes

  • 0xC004C008 — the key has been used on too many devices. Phone activation usually resolves it if the old install was properly removed.
  • 0xC004F050 — invalid key for this edition. You are trying to use a Home key on Pro, or vice versa.
  • 0xC004C060 — the key has been blocked. This is the one that points to a grey-market key rather than a transfer problem.

What about Office?

The same rule applies: retail editions of Office can be moved, OEM editions cannot. Sign out of the old installation, uninstall it, then sign in or enter the key on the new machine. If the licence is attached to a Microsoft account, moving it is simply a matter of signing in.

Before you replace the old machine

Do the deactivation while the old computer still boots. Once it is wiped, sold or dead you have lost the easy path and you are relying on phone activation to sort it out. Five minutes now saves a long call later.
